Breaking every rule going and then some

Post by raXor »

The guy i'm partnered with is breaking every single rule going right now. I understand the pressure, particularly right now with failures, but c'mon. The guy is complaining that i'm slow which may be partially the case, but he's only fast because everything he does is procedurally wrong. A list of his "tips" to complete include: Taking pictures of the front garden without the parcel even in the shot, or even worse taking the picture of the steering wheel of the van, dumping parcels in bins, throwing parcels literally 5m in the air into the back garden to save the walk slightly, not closing gates because it's a time waster, stuffing 2 or 3 d2ds into one property letterbox so that the following 2 or 3 can be missed out. One of the last parcels delivered was actually thrown at someone's front door apparently with a comment about not having to write the card out because they'll "see it" soon enough - that is providing it doesn't get stolen.

Sometimes the manager tries to put the pressure on me if I’m partnered with someone relatively new and they don’t scan this or that but I can’t be responsible for everything they do and I’m not a coach so just need to let things play out. The company is a shambles anyway.

Sounds like a good percentage of our new starters unfortunately. They all chuck pretty much every parcel in a bin/over a fence/on a doorstep and were rewarded before Christmas with little prizes for high first time delivery scores. Then theres me terrified to put a foot wrong as I know I’ll probably be sacked for it.
It’s s**t but it’s just the way it is now and it won’t improve in the future.

I doubt you'd be sacked for doorstepping these days,

unless you did something really daft liked signed for something yourself and then doorstepped it.

Thing is, this guy isn't new. He's been with RM for around 5 years. The laziest thing he does is to drop a letter on the street, realise a couple of meters away after turning his head, and simply leave it there without any effort to retrieve.

There's nothing YOU can do about it mate. We've all had these kinds of expeiriences over the years. We call them ''Runners'' and the management love them because they make it look as if everything's dooable. Although as you've observed it's not the way we're meant to work.

You just try and concentrate on doing the job properly, you're not his manager and personally I wouldn't bother ''Trying'' to tell your Manager what he gets up to as they're not really interested. You just watch your own back and try not to follow his example. Good Luck. :cuppa

If it's stressing you out - ask to move jobs. Maybe even explain to a manager that you cannot work with your colleague - you don't have to explain why.

Most posties doorstep. Royal Mail clearly want us to, but cannot say it. You'd bring so much more back if you didn't....

Throwing parcels in bins, over hedges/gates is a step too far and encouraging others to do that is ridiculous.

The whole parcel delivery business is a shambles as customers know full well when they are due a delivery but most don't tell us what they expect us to do with it if they are out at work etc, if you do speak to them via a Ring door cam most say "can you chuck it over the gate mate if it's a "chuckable" parcel. Although this guy seems to be taking matters to the extreme and one day it'll probably catch up with him.

I think that most of the rules that are stated as royal mail policy are absolutely expected and encouraged to be ignored. Everything is smoke and mirrors. What is said to happen and what actually happens are so far removed from one another than you have to wonder what the point is of churning out so much BS.

I don't think those of us still adhering as best we can to old standards, and on paper they have not been relaxed, aren't really operating according to the plan. I think the management all want the door-stepping, they just won't come out and bleeding say so because they love pretending that those old standards belong to them.

Managers do not like doing anything that resembles real management, because that requires a small amount of intelligence and effort.
The only time they'll come close to doing it is if the pressure comes from above them.
And then it will be a friendly chat if they can get away with just that, even for behaviours that are undeniably gross misconduct.
Meanwhile in other parts of the country postmen get suspended or sacked for taking their breaks in or near a pub.
There is no rhyme or reason to how any misconduct will be handled locally.

OPs situation is a frustrating one to be in but reporting it could just add to the frustration if no remedial action is taken.

I am in a position where I have no more effs to give with this company so I'm becoming rather confident (perhaps too confident) with using the raising concerns tile on the people app.
And I have seen a reasonable amount of success for me to have faith in that system.
So my advice to op would be to report it that way, it will feel frustrating at times but once you break out of the local management loop things do seem to improve.

Well put OG can't disagree with any of your points. :Applause

Our Local Div Rep has started recommending the ''Raising a Concern'' Tile. As he put it we're stuck in this eternal circle of OPG reports something to Unit Rep... He reports it to Div Rep ... He takes it up with the Regional Manager ... and he just comes out with BS such as ''Operational Requirements'' and supports the DOM :thumbdown

As you say it breaks out of this Management Loop and lets those higher up the Tree get an idea for what's going on. Glad you've had success with it. :cuppa
