Why is it frowned upon to Work Day Off/Early IPS Sorting in Royal Mail ???

So I been in Royal Mail over 16 years in Birmingham. Ever since then I started working day off. Once I learned most of the walks. The sorting was a piece of piss. So once I learned all the sorting. I started coming in early IPS sorting. I don’t even look at the IPS board. I sort the Mail/Packet in the right Box/Sack QUICK QUICK BANG BANG lol. I have been told there’s workers like us in every office lol. I can easily do 2-4 York’s of flats in 1 hour.

Here’s the frowned upon bit. I get on with all my work colleagues. Have a joke and laugh with them. But when ever I ask if your gonna work day off or come in to do early IPS sorting. They get all stropy and say f that and this and that. They also say who ever work overtime are idiots and it’s a mugs game lol. They all say family time. Well I got a family too lol

Out of 68 ish staff. Only 13 ish staff work day off.

To me working day off/early IPS sorting is a good money earner. If you’re willing to work.

The only day off I get is Sundays/Bank Holidays/Holidays.

I always been told this company runs on overtime.

Do u work day off or come in early IPS sorting ?

Plenty of people in our office work their rest days, some almost every week. It isn’t frowned upon here. Personally I’ve never worked my rest day since we went to a 5 day week lol.

It's ok if you don't mind working for less than your hourly wage.

I rarely take my day off and I’m not alone in that at my office, it’s commonplace.

Being able to take all your days off is a luxury that many don’t realise is a luxury.

Pretty much everyone in my office in brum works the Saturday even though it's always a rdw for us, to the point where some take it for granted and expect us to work every Saturday

I realise I am lucky that I don’t need to work overtime but working for less than hourly wage isn’t exactly much of an incentive is it ?

The incentive is getting an extra £100 a week/400 a month, if you don't need it then it doesn't really matter if it's £12ph or £15ph

I think most big firms across all industries run on overtime these days

In the 30 odd years I've been working here there have been times when I've done docket and times I havnt . One thing I've noticed when u don't do any u remove yourself from all the politics of an office. Its tougher then ever 2 do extra work nowadays so I take my hat off 2 anyone who needs or is prepared to do extra as they deserve every penny

I don’t have a problem with anyone choosing to work their day off or come in early – as long as they are happy to do it. I probably benefit in some way too. Oversize is sorted; packets are sorted; the manual is ready in the IPS to prep. etc.

They may need the money; or they may be happier at work than at home – I don’t judge because I don’t know everything about them. I see people at work that I never see outside of the office and don’t know what is going on in their life. They stand there in their uniform looking similar to me but they are not me.

I take my hat off to them though as I couldn’t work my day off. OK, I’ve done it occasionally but regretted it later in the week. As I get older I need the rest!

Also I think those that are chasing the extra money may not end up happier. Your time and what you choose to do today, tomorrow, etc. is up to you. If tomorrow you have a day off I’d recommend you do something with it other than work. Something you enjoy and is constructive. Heck, sit in a chair and just read a book.

All the money in the world cannot fix a broken down body or mind. No amount of money can buy yesterday back - it's gone forever.

Nobody is frowning about people working extra and being paid for it. The problems start when people come in early and work for free.

Its not a luxury - its a right not to work 6 days a week.

If you want to work 6 days and get paid then do so, but I don't recommend saying workers rights are a luxury as it could mislead others.

Working a day off or starting early to work on IPS is viewed negatively by some, who see it as an easy way out instead of covering delivery duties. Others believe it reflects poor management, as it indicates a lack of proper staffing and the need for overtime help.

Personally, I believe that if the RM is willing to pay you and you're not feeling pressured, you should take as much overtime as you want. However, remember that you have the right to decline any overtime.
