Older Staff Being Targeted ?

Just in my opinion, in my office, it seems a lot of our older indoor staff are being targeted and now forced out on a duty, even though they are indoors for a reason and not fit enough to walk miles on delivery. I honestly believe the management wants this so they go off sick and eventually leave to poor health just so they can be replaced by new staff on the newer contracts and exploited even more.

I think this is a disgusting attempt to rid employees as i have seen a few staff already leave due to this action.

Does anyone else notice this in their office?

the indoor staff at our place aren’t asked to do any outdoor work. That said, and despite a double knee (or hip?) replacement and various other conditions, one old boy still enjoys going out to deliver the odd special or to empty a postbox when needed.

They definitely want more staff on the newer contracts - our office has employed another dozen of them in the last few months. Although we have been short staffed for years, which is why we continually relied on lapsed duties and staff working days off, it now seems to me like these new staff are seen as ready replacements for older staff. A flexible, lower paid workforce is the way that Royal Mail wants to go.

There hasn't been any indoor work in our DO for years, if you are permanently unable to perform a delivery duty you are IHR and out the door

There’s definitely a whiff of ‘First they came for the injured, and I said nothing because I was not injured. Then they can for the old…..’, about this which I can’t believe management aren’t seeing.
Our place has been flooded with pretend managers who do the job of line managers for no pay rise. Why pay a lino when you can get a pretend manager to do the same job with zero financial incentive?

The job (when they are recruiting), is advertised on Success Factors as a COM manager position. When you read into it it clearly states that you remain an OPG and can be put back on walks if you are not needed to cover a lino. The people who go for this either want to apply for a line manager position at some point, or they want to be a pretend manager rather than a postie. Some remain a pretend manager for years. They are supposed to go to different offices as needed but most don’t.

How big is your office? Also, how would one find out about any of these positions close to a specific location?

Large office.

Managers are quite secretive about jobs that come up because they have their favourites and they don’t want more applicants.
