Update on our Universal Service reform submission and further business progress

On 17 April we gave an update regarding our response to the announcement of a possible offer for the Company by EP Corporate Group (an affiliate of VESA Equity). Today we are making a further announcement to the market that provides an update on our Universal Service reform submission and further business progress.

We cannot say anything further at this time but we will update you as soon as it is appropriate to do so.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

All non-First Class letter deliveries, including Second Class, would be delivered every other
weekday
After the 1st day you're still going to be delivering 2C every day. We won't be processing the 1C and 2C separately.

Exactly! It only makes a difference to day 1!

Well, they won't be delivered daily but it would be a huge pain in the butt for DO's if they have to sort through all the mail to find find first class

Not to the same street/house we won't that's going to be impossible, as "Evie" will have enough work to do just delivering the 1c & Tracked and the others are flipping duties each day?

Regardless I wonder how much p.a. this is really going to save RM, as upto £300M feels like a figure they've just guessed, surely they could make a reasonably precise calculation as they'll know how many staff hours they'll save?

They did say that there would have to be changes in processing, but I have no idea what's possible at the mail centre end, much like the Boses at RM I would imagine

On Monday 2c is held until Tuesday. On Tuesday 2c is released for delivery. Also on Tuesday 2c is held until Wednesday. On Wednesday 2c is released for delivery. Also on Wednesday 2c is held until Thursday. Etc., etc…

So the only day of this new system which will notice any difference is Day1, every day after that will have a rolling train of 2c mail to release for delivery ??

Even if there were no changes in processing, just because it was released doesn't mean it would get delivered.

However I think the next 2 years may see a change in processing as well.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Where is it all going to be held though? If the mail centres are not going to do anything different, then it falls to the DO, does it all get sorted and prepped? does it get pushed to the side? (assuming there's no first class mixed in), I would imagine that's there's not much free space in either MC's or DO's to hold this mail, and less staff with more to do added in the equation.

… and they’re not telling the public and businesses to only post 2c mail on alternate days, so the volume arriving each day will be the same 🙄🙄

Like I've always said, those "losses" that Royal Mail have made in the last few years have partly been strategic. They could have done without industrial action which cost them £200 million, the cyber threat and the OfCom fine but over a billion pounds has been ploughed into parcel modernisation.

We have just had our best Xmas peak in 4 years and the business has now recruited over 9,000 FTE on the reduced terms and cons which gives them greater flexibility for delivering parcels on the evenings/weekends which is where a lot of our business is going. The new attendance and sick policy via the deal will have dramatically cut sick pay which was running at a £250 million loss in just one year. Regardless of the thousands of staff that have left; Royal Mail are utterly relentless in their race to the bottom awarding bonuses and incentives for its managers whilst it continues to get rid of the 'dead wood'. It may be some time yet though before staff on the better contracts are forced to sign an inferior one that includes working evenings and weekend work for less pay.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

The majority of mail is DSA crap.

Is that done every day, or what?

At the moment it's just DSA Economy that gets held by the DTS system. RM will probably extend that to cover all 2C. You'll probably then get days when you get hammered in DOs when multiple boxes of mech get released for every walk.

We'd probably end up getting to the point where the batches have to be run twice as there'd be too much mail to run it all and meet the dispatch times. It could end up meaning dispatch times being probably at least an hour later and so start times in DOs would have to be made at least an hour later.

That sounds so ridiculously inefficient and if you consider the knock on impact across the network, it’s difficult to see where they plucked their £300m saving figure from other than thin air.
