They could just not deliver letters at all then they could save billions.

Re: Ofcom useless
We know RM want to be an owner driver courier company pocketing cash for shareholders. They would rather not bother with letters unless they are tracked.

Re: Ofcom useless
It's funny how Ofcom went from issuing fines to a 100 page report declaring RM need to change, within months of each other.
Ofcom are either incompetent or simply just don't care.
CWU are simply incompetent. I've never seen any propositions or visions of what they consider change for the future, they simply just spout politician/corporate meaningless sentences in the name of protecting jobs.
Everyone knew the writing was on the wall with RM's future. The result of the strikes was a few percent wage increase and really achieved nothing. Employees really are best off jumping ship if they don't like the current direction of RM, letters are done, RM has easily destroyed any confidence business had left in that.

Re: Ofcom useless
The CWU came out of the dispute fighting for its own survival and I believe that’s still the case . There’s only so much they can do if a private company is pushing ahead with unprecedented change. Ofcom seem to be in bed with Royal Mail and neither the Tories or Labour want to be seen to take sides leading up to a general election, so we are all in no mans land right now.WASD wrote: ↑24 Jan 2024, 08:39It's funny how Ofcom went from issuing fines to a 100 page report declaring RM need to change, within months of each other.

It does feel and appear like that. I left right before the votes came through to strike, and on here people felt the CWU were coming across as weak. They just seem to me to give the impression they merely have one tool at their disposal, 'the threat of strike'.chickenwittle wrote: ↑24 Jan 2024, 08:44The CWU came out of the dispute fighting for its own survival and I believe that’s still the case . I'm of the opinion now that the CWU, if even with 100% support of every employee of RM, would still come across as weak.
It's at the point now if the CWU had any integrity left they would be transparent about the situation. But they just keep pedalling nonsense while paying their own salaries, much like the behaviour of many regulators.
And it really does make me feel sad that RM has been lost as a contributor to a positive functioning society/community.

Re: Ofcom useless
It's time to accept that RM is a corrupt and dishonest employer. Nobody with any power is going to stop them because they are also corrupt and dishonest ( government and Ofcom ) or incompetent ( CWU ). RM are hell bent on this ridiculous obsession with parcels and have managed to successfully alienate staff, customers and businesses. Instead of working together to create, all they've done is destroy.

Re: Ofcom useless
I am split on this....
If a 3 day week meant they would offer 3 day a week contracts - I'd take that as I find walking 10 miles a day, 5 days a week absolutely knackers me out and I luckily could get away with working just 3 days a week.
That said,
Mail would be classed as 'heavy' if we only did 3 days a week. It would obviously mean that we'd have 2 days' mail each of those 3 days.
I think most of the mail we deliver isn't actually that important. A massive % of it is junk mail. If every customer decided to unsubscribe from mailing lists as well as go digital with their bills....it would be so quiet. I only get 2 letters per month now.... that said I am delivering to people who get 3 to 5 letters daily - I don't know why they get so much mail.

Re: Ofcom useless
If the company is doing poorly and mail is genuinely going down, then surely we need to go to a 5 day week....Splappy_McSplap wrote: ↑24 Jan 2024, 09:31Government says no.

They could make a deal with certain businesses/NHS/government to deliver their letters on Saturdays, obviously that would be with a smaller workforce.... but I don't know how you would implement that so that those letters could get through the system smoothly. You'd probably have to have someone going round doing collections from those premises, specifically for these letters.

Re: Ofcom useless
...or maybe they see sense, realise that privatising a public service with a USO that is inherently unprofitable (when all the slimy low grade psychopaths at the top care about is lining their own pockets) is never going to work, and that the only option that isn't a short-term half-measure that just brings them back to the same problem (or worse, e.g foreign investment) is to renationalise Royal Mail and enshrine its protection in law.
Yeah, never going to happen.

I'm like you as I would happily take a 3 day week. However, if Royal Mail will be saving £400-650 million pounds - then a decent proportion of this future profit should surely be paid to the existing staff that are walking 10 miles a day delivering two or three days worth of mail - not the greedy fat cats and executive board that are just taking the money out of the company.
OfCom have done a complete a U-turn from fining Royal Mail and telling them to pull their socks up regarding Quality of Service to actually putting forward recommendations that will actually reduce Quality of Service by saying its 'out of date'. I mean who really needs bank cards and NHS appointments asap? Their incompetence is beyond belief. Last year, they couldn't find any evidence that RM management had been prioritising parcels over letters - where the f**k were they looking? The figures speak for themselves don't they. In 2022/23 Royal Mail only delivered 73.7% of 1st class and 90.7% of 2nd class on time.
But why is OfCom now suggesting that the USO is going to be too costly? Royal Mail were actually offering its 128,000 employees an incentive bonus of £500 to maintain USO targets, which regardless of whether we achieved it or not, is over £60 million. That suggests to me that there is money available and Royal Mail were willing to pay it. Before anyone jumps in saying that they never intended to pay us this bonus in full, where has this money gone that they haven't paid out?
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Re: Ofcom useless
Whats the CWU going to do about it? The 'W's' are incapable of even saying the word renationalisation, which is CWU policy, decided by the parliament of our union. Walsh moans constantly that anything other than his own personal strategy will result in administration. The sole policy of the W's is to defend as many of us exiting the industry with their inferior vr terms as possible leaving behind workers on worse t's and c's. No race to the bottom the pair of them said. And now they're whinging that the industry has betrayed them again. How many times are they going to get punched in the face before they stand up for themselves and us?
