This year due too the price of the stamp etc?.

i would think so. part of me thinks its a ploy to stop people sending letters anymore

Had a good few customers in the doorstep telling me they won't be sending as many due to the cost.
No-one can tell me that millions of Christmas cards at,say, 75p are less profitable than parcels.
It's bloody ridiculous.

It could eventually backfire.
Could be seen as an extravagant luxury to send a 1st class card.... Or have lip fillers... Your value choice.
