I'm considering leaving RM, the last year has really ruined the job, and now we've just had so much added to our walk we're going an hour over each day.
I'm worn out by it, and don't see things improving, so I am looking for another job.
I'd like to start leaving in every day and finishing on time, but that'll sour my currently good relationship with management.
Do managers give references, or is it all handled by HR?
Would any reference just say "This employee was employed between these dates" with no other remarks (the civil service does this (used to do?). Think it was as a way to protect themselves from being sued. Or do managers give real references?
If managers give references, then at the moment I'd imagine I'd get a good one, but if I start leaving in during the xmas build up, I imagine that would change.

Suppose it all depends on your relationship with your manager and if they can be bothered to give you a decent reference. If your com is lazy they will just tell you to contact HR. I've been asking mine for months to change a few house numbers around on the frame that they botched up in the revisions and they still haven't bothered to do it.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

My last two employers have just given the start and finish dates and what my job was, so I’m fairly sure its standard for all employers. Don’t worry about management and do what you can each day, don’t tire yourself out for them.

So, out of interest, when you fill in a job application and they ask for references, do put your Dom or the HR department address?

It’s the HR address you use. Managers can’t give references

It used to be dealt with by an office in Bristol years ago, no idea if that's still the case

Id just like to point out that you already don't have a good relationship with your manager if the only way for this relationship to remain amicable is forcing you do go over to complete these silly duties. Sounds like an abusive relationship to me.I'd like to start leaving in every day and finishing on time, but that'll sour my currently good relationship with management.

Having worked there I wouldn't ask a royal mail manager to leave a note for the milkman

They can in a private capacity, its not something the are "required" to do.
The official reference is just Conformation of employment dates and a generic reason for leaving.
