Yesterday in one of our units we had a very serious incident, and whilst all rollaways are serious this one I wanted to share so you see the physical impact of an out of control vehicle rolling 40 yards. The impact is devastating.

Thankfully nobody was injured, however the van yet to be moved as a structural engineer needs to assess the damage before removal.
Imagine if someone was standing there or walking past. The potential for significant injury is very likely.

Please all again, check, check and double check the handbrake is applied, leave in gear and turn the wheels. That process can literally save lives.

I can understand RM's no excuses policy on this, a rollaway van like this could easily kill.

It's unfortunate for the postie involved, but not even putting it in gear, as well as not setting the handbrake? Unless they had a medical episode it's hard to defend really.

I think in the not so distant future you'll have electric vans with automatic electric handbrakes.

Some of our Peugeot’s already have auto handbrakes, pull up and just kill the engine. They are great, not so great after you have used one for afew days then drive about in one of the sheds and you forget your not driving the auto handbrake one anymore.

I find it tricky remembering the different buttons on every van - at last count there’s something like 8 different work vans in our yard. One of them with an electric handbrake has the button in the exact same place as the Peugeot has its window button! I’m worried one day I’ll go to put the window down while driving and end up hitting the handbrake.

Apologies if I'm being thick (in my defence it is early) and I'm not attempting to make light of a serious incident in any way...but am I missing something here?

In that last picture, of the interior, there literally appears to be no handbrake at all, just a gap behind the gearstick where it should be located?

EDIT....yeah, it's me being thick, sorry. Just looked again and see it isn't a combi as I'd initially thought. Therefore I assume the handbrake is located elsewhere

EDIT 2....and now I see it, protruding from the seat. I think I might go back to bed, lol, I don't think I'll be offering much worthwhile to this day.

We can all make assumptions but in the picture the handbrake is in the neutral position but the ratchet may of failed and caused this but who knows. All I do know is French vans are s**t electrics fail windows shatter and doors fall off and they have a habit of overbearing warnings ie the handbrake!

I think it is too easy to have no sympathy for the postie. However I've done it and I'm sure others have too. I was fortunate I noticed quickly, my wheels weren't straight and the van rolled into a bush close by. The reason it happened..... Pressure to complete a ridiculous workload.
