Current Campaign Rethink
Has anyone worked out how much Royal Mail has saved in Wages when we are out on the Picket Line?
How many weeks will it take of us Striking for Royal Mail to cover the 2.5% wage rise on offer. Or will Royal Mail management sit it out untill this 2.5% is covered, save what they initially offered and possibly use it as a bit extra and actually cost them nothing or infact profit them.
I think it is time to rethink the current action and start hurting Royal Mail and not our Wage Packets.
Has anyone in Northern Ireland had any contact from their Councillors, MLAs or MPs or has anyone tried to get their support? What about anyone in Mainland UK Scottish / Welsh Assembley, Westminster?
I feel that these Politicians only need and use us when they need their Political Literature Distributed pre Elections surely its time they repaid us.
Lets rethink our way forward and any suggestions are welcome

1 day strikes are not hurting them lisburn postie, we need an all out for a week called!! as far as the mp's and that they dont give a toss!! What are things like in your office ? No late starts yet. We were told at wtll that it would be 13th aug but CWU rep told us on picket line on Mon that these will be put off for a while.

Not everyone thinks as we do on the subject though mate. There are some weak willed people about. As for people who have made arrangements around finishing before their official time, they should have asked what the hours were at the interview. If this doesn't suit them, they should fight the enforced later start times now by working to the 318 because they will end up working until 3 o'clock every day before long.L Tommo wrote:IWW mate.. Do a quick equasion of lost wages within your office,
90 people out on average of £ 8.00phr and x by 8hrs =£5760 per day Royal Mail are saving every day we strike, add this up nationwide and compare it to 2.5% nationwide.

Paying casuals to clear the backlog at mail centres
The OT payments to sort out the mess casuals cause.
The costs of informing businesses of collection/delivery arrangements when we are on strike

this action is causing r.m grief theres mail every where you look . they are to bring in agency staff so what they get paid and do nothing for it it got to be costing r.m . but i would like to see everybody use the vans to really get it home to r.m that it's only the fact that there has been in the past goodwill and the posties using private vehicles that has enabled these 'vast profits' for r.m

I think Royal Mail are saving at least £1 Million per day from the strikes.
Royal Mail are not going to change their minds and say ok, carry on as you are and here is 4.5% for you.
The best we can hope for is 3% and and elongated timetable of changes.
The other options I can see are to split Royal Mail in two: the delivery side and the collection/distributions side. Our office is delivering more mail this year than it did last year but more and more is coming through from DHL/TNT etc. I can't see any other way for Royal Mail to compete.
Perhaps refusing to deliver Mailsort would be better action - RM's major income.
Our union rep also tells us that you can be disciplined for changing your work practices - it is not official industrial action. i.e. if you use your car, start early and do lots of overtime then stopping doing any of those things could land you in trouble.

What happens if your car breaks down or goes in for repairs.
What happens if your family situation changes so you can no longer go in early or work overtime.
You can do these things if you wish and you can decide not to if you want. As far as I know you can stop doing all those things as RM don't pay you do to do them so they can't expect you to do so even if you have a history of doing so. Also its against the law of the land to force people to do over time if its not expressly in their contract.

Your contract of employment should include the conditions for working overtime. You only have to work overtime if your contract says so. Even if it does you can't usually be forced to work more than an average of 48 hours per week. If you're told to work more than this and you don't want to, you should first take it up with your employer.
