Vacation while off on sick leave

Hoping for some advice here from anyone who has been in a similar position. So, last week after waiting for ages I finally had a surgical procedure carried out which is going to take at least 3 months to recover from. I got lucky with a cancellation and had very little time to prepare but I wasn't going to turn it down. However, my summer leave has been booked for August and I fully intend (if possible) to head off on holiday which has been pre booked began the surgical appointment came in. What is the RM position on this does anyone know? I certainly would not be able to be back at work doing my round so soon but I am hoping to be able to board an aeroplane and just chill for a week or so in a lovely warm climate. Would it be frowned upon for me to do this while still on sick leave? Anyone been in a similar situation? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Doctor may say it’s good for you mental health and recovery to be away. In the old days when sick absences weren’t an issue I agreed to sign myself back to work took my holiday and then returned back on S/L and manager counted it as one absence and thus saved himself having to hand me another 2weeks annual leave……..in 2025 I doubt this will wash tho

Check your contract and the absence policy. Its entirely discretionary and you will need the employers agreement.

There is no law prohibiting you from going on holiday whilst on sick leave but there are certain rules and best practice.

You should inform your manager that you will be going on the holiday and the dates. Sick pay may then become holiday pay and then revert to sick pay. They could consider it fraud if you didn’t inform them - depends what your manager is like.

Don’t post pics online of yourself on holiday. They will be used against you if you look too fit and healthy for someone off sick.

You can go on holiday whilst sick and in line with policy you have to inform your manager.

As said above they can't stop you from taking leave.

Your book room will change your status to sick whilst on leave via the psp system.

It will count as a continued absence.
