Usually you wait until you have loads of seniority and then wait until there's a redundancy situation on at your office.

Your DOM has nothing to do with it really. Positions have to be redundant. That is, your office must have more staff than they need and with the turnover of staff at the moment, I doubt many people in the company will be getting VR.

Depending on the severity of your medical reasons, you may be able to explore Ill Health Retirement but even then there are a lot of hoops to jump through.

Did not know Royal Mail are making people redundant other than Managers?
Other than that there is ill health retirement usually for people with long term health issues and unable to work.

Not much chance of anyone in my office (apart from managers) being offered VR, got so many vacancies that they've resorted to asking us if we know anyone who'd be interested in applying for a job in RM

VR in delivery is a very rare thing now. We need more staff not less.

its either 40 ish or 20 ish grand more chance of the latter lets face it walking 5 hours plus everyday hows that goin to work out for 30 year plus in the job approaching there 60s and over, at the end of the day ihr should be re named being unable to complete a delivery everyday doesnt mean your knackered all together smaller deliveries should be made for older long serving staff on slightly reduced hours :arrrghhh

It depends how long you've been in but in almost all cases VR is preferable.

The difference is you have no influence over VR, you'll only get it if there are surplus hours in your office and you're senior enough to be one of those selected.

Definitely an excellent point Mags,

Shorter deliveries do make sense for anyone with health issues, not just for the golden oldies.

This can be a reduced contract or if a true golden oldie thats served their time more indoor work before heading out to a shorter delivery.

I’ve got this wild idea of smaller rounds for those nearing retirement, smaller rounds for those PT staff on 5/6 hour days who don’t want or aren’t allowed OT, and then standard rounds for FT staff.
The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

You want to create a two-tier workforce? And how long would RM take to decide that those in the lower group should get a lower hourly rate?

So what's your solution?
I know that's not your strong suit but give it a go.

Yet another pejorative reply?
Not for me to suggest how RM should treat P/T posties, but that doesn't mean I should agree with this poster's suggestion.
