Out of curiosity, what did your manager say when you handed notice in?
Shut the door on your way out. I’m in a draft😂

Forgive me for saying, Postie White, but you seem mightily unsure if you are making the right decision in leaving RM. Given your own doubts, if we were talking face to face in real life I would tell you to hold fire and stay where you are for the time being. Why don’t you wait it out for the next few months and see how things are post takeover? The jobs market will be just as buoyant later in the year too.

You do realise the job this guy has accepted right? Who I their right mind would turn down a 4 day week job with 3 months off plus 5 weeks holiday to stay at RM? :left: :left: :left: :left:

He comes across as though he is decidedly unsure.

With respect, he def shouldn’t take careers advice from your good self. You are bitter as you left the company and your only route back is on a new-entrant contract, and you are keen to see others make the same “mistake” you have — to leave, only to then immediately regret your choice.

With all due respect and no offence but your advice is absolutely terrible, in fact you sound like you are begging him to not leave if I'm being honest, I've heard that type of thing before.

I also find it quite amusing that you repeatedly make up fantasies about my life and post them in response to my posts on here. If I wasn't so easy going I would say it's disturbing tbh :left:

I think it's normal to have doubts given the fact I've been there 11 years and although I'm not that keen on the indoor work and the way we are spoken to by the managers I do enjoy the craic with the colleagues.
My duty is a singleton semi rural duty and I absolutely love it and have been on there for just short of two years however there are people more senior to me that have earmarked my duty if these changes are implemented "if" it stays as a singleton but with it being only half a mile away from other duties I've a feeling it may get merged.
Every colleague I've spoken to in my office has told me to go for it and in a way envious of the 3 day weekends I will be having. I've also tried 8 times to get this job and failed 7 times in 3 years I've applied and given the fact I'm 52 now then it may take me to 55 to get another chance with the council and may even be seen as unemployable at that age.

Having said that if I was guaranteed to stay on my duty for the next 10 years I would stay in a heartbeat because that simply won't be the case. The duty isn't easy by any means, it's hilly for starters but it's the best duty I've ever had.
There is a gamble whatever I do. If I stay and the duty is whipped away from me in 6 months resulting in picking a duty (or ending up as a cover or even a reserve) then I will always regret not taking this chance to work for the council.
If I leave I'd be taking a pay drop of around £7k a year and I may not even like the bins plus I'd be on a trial for 6 months but all jobs require a trial, BUT there are ex posties that have jumped to the bins in my area and never regretted it. I also need to look at the bigger picture with the council because I could go and get my HGV class 2 in the winter when I'm off and they will always use me for the driving side of it which would be an uplift in pay (I brought this question up in the interview) ,so Im sure there will be more openings in the council then there will be with RM because there is literally nowhere to go unless you want to be a manager.

So in summary I'am unsure yes ONLY because of my duty but is that enough for me to stay and hold out at RM? Probably not given my age now and I've not had one bad word about working for the council, even from people that have worked for them so I'll have to take this gamble because I may never get this opportunity again I guess given the fact it's already took me 3 years and any future interviews with the manager will remember me knowing I pulled the plug this time round. I guess if I do hate it I will try and progress forward with the HGV and get work elsewhere, I'll never return to RM on this new contract ever.
The selfish side of me when I leave wants my duty to become combined or they have a repicks and would have lost it anyway in months to come as I would know I would have definitely made the right choice.
I think my key is to get my HGV licence as backup because there are always jobs there for driving in my area incase things don't work out.

Well, we do have at least one thing in common: I used to be a massive London’s Burning fan too. If I had to liken you to a character from the show it would be Sicknote. Do you remember him?

I wish you all the best in your new job, but be under no illusion that council cutbacks will be as brutal as anything Royal Mail have in store. The bin routes here were revised last year and were a shambles. One of the guys who left RM to do a similar job, who I see regularly still, says it is exactly the same now. All about maximising hours you are paid for. They might be targeting certain areas but with finances being crunched everywhere, I wouldn’t bank on those early finishes being a thing indefinitely.

Do you mean the rounds are back to how it was before?
Are you saying the cutbacks will be like RM or not as bad?

I’m saying it is the same as RM now. The routes were adjusted and are sometimes unachievable so bins/rubbish isn’t collected for some roads on the correct days. Too much work and not enough staff. If you think about it, why would the council continue to pay people to go home early? Of course they want all of their staff working the hours they are being paid for.

As said, this might be a local issue here, but our council tax bills continue to rise and the service gets worse. You might be luckier.

Makes sense, they have made cutbacks recently but it's the management that they have got rid of not the workers.
I'm not sure why they have kept job and knock to be honest. RM had it for years
