£14.58/£18.23 is the London rate, elsewhere it's £12.29/£15.36

And don't forget the higher rate only kicks in after 40 hours.

Don't know why this character keeps quoting those figures as it's obviously not the rate of pay for most of the country.

Oh yeah also quick spot of maths
£14.58 x 40 = £583.20 x 52 = £30.326 so to earn 40k on the new contract you'd have to do nearly 10k of overtime so a bit more than just one rest day a week.
Would have to work 51 hours, every week of the year to achieve 40k. No paid breaks either so that would mean working around 56 hours a week for 40k in London. 2k in pension payments. Tax would be 5k, NI would be 3k.

So you would bring out 30k for 56 hours a week, every week. If you are happy with that then crack on pal

Some erroneous assumptions there that don’t need correcting for umpteenth time, not least because it falls on deaf ears! To be honest, I’m only replying to see if I have finally managed to get the hang of the quote function!!

You even said 9 hours overtime a week gets you to nearly 40k, so 11 hours a week would get you just over 40k, if you are not putting 2k in your pension it’s pointless, will be about £420 a month in tax and £250 NI. They are facts matey. The only thing I’m assuming is you take a legally required break.

So here is October’s payslip:

Basic pay: 173:56 hours, £2535.92
Overtime Premium Oct 2023: 22:35 hours, £411.82
Overtime Premium Sep 2023: 16:20 hours, £297.70
Gross pay: £3245.44
Less tax paid: £439.40
Less Employee NIC: £263.69
Net takehome pay: £2,542.35

Doing some very simple maths, we can see that multiplying the gross pay figure (£3,245.44) by 12 (there are 12 months in a year, unless that has been changed by the CWU) equates to a gross salary of £38,945.28.

Do these figures stack up when subjected to your forensic scrutinyy?
1. There is 2 months worth of overtime on here, so you can’t x12 for a yearly figure. Unless you work 39 hours a month o/t.
2. Net pay = 30k (again using the 2 month o/t figure)
3. This is for hours worked, not including any breaks, your terms and conditions are shocking compared to the previous contracts. If you are happy with it then crack on but 30k net for 56 hours a week isn’t great. You are new and it’s a novelty for you.

I did wonder at first if I was talking to Diane Abbott regarding the crazy numbers but the OP seems genuine enough.

Like I said in an earlier post you're going to burn out sooner rather than later working all those hours AND Royal Mail are always looking to cut costs and one of the biggest ones is staff costs. That is after all why they employed staff on less money if I'm not very much mistaken. We have had overtime bans now and again in our office so it's not something that can be relied on. The other point that the OP is forgetting is that on annual leave they will only be paid a basic rate, so maybe that might knock off a few bags of sand (grand).

I'm content with pay but like Lou said it's unfair that newer starts should be on less pay, terms and cons than the rest of us. If they need to be doing all these hours just to make ends meet, then something is badly wrong.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

“Would have to work 51 hours, every week of the year to achieve 40k” is just one erroneous assumption. It would be perfectly possible to do just a regular rest day attendance of nine hours for most of the year, with additional hours done only in periods of peak activity - Mother’s Day, Easter, Christmas, etc, the odd hour here or there.

And no, there isn’t two months’ worth of overtime included — overtime cutoff is halfway through the month, so there is always overtime carried over to the next pay period — another erroneous assumption.

However, time has come to draw a line in this tedious and circular debate. The discussion, if indeed it could be called that, has moved so far off topic that this thread should be closed. I won’t be engaging on this particular thread any further. But fear not - I will respond to others and won’t be deterred by unfriendly characters on here. Love to the haters!

You stop messaging whenever you want pal, 51 hours work a week = 40k gross, 30k net. Your own figures show that. Fortunately don’t need to do anything like that. You crack on with what you want to do, we’ve had 6 new starters on the new contract, 4 left within a month. All nice people, just don’t think the job is worth what they are being paid, especially as the other 40 people in the office are on far better terms. But like I said if you are happy keep going 👍

The amusing thing is admin could clear up this ‘old chestnut’ in a single post, but they never do for whatever reason. IP addresses are logged when we post. Part of me thinks they like conflict on the board for some reason as they never address the bullying and harassment that goes on here.

We are all going to have different opinions on here based on our own experiences and that is what makes this forum interesting. Sometimes exchanges can get a bit heated but if anyone thinks that they are being bullied on here and it is affecting them, then the obvious thing to do is to stop posting.

Back on topic - no letters were delivered from our duty today as we were told to prioritise the parcels that have built up from the last few days and that includes the Tracked and non-tracked items. We were told to take everything out with us, but alas, they wouldn't all fit in the van!! Eventually management told us to leave some behind. Seems to me unless you're prepared to go back out again when you've finished your shift it's just not going to get delivered and only a handful of guys are bothering to do that to get their frames cleared. Good on them for doing that and very commendable but many of us have a home and family to look after.

Ah somebody with sense.
Yes the parcel situation is becoming a issue if we haven't reached peak yet, we have a bulk relief driver taking as much as he can fit in his van, but again he can only take so much, today i was getting to the point where i was struggling to fit much more in and this is a Tuesday supposedly the lightest day of the week. It will be interesting when i have to ask the question " What am i leaving" when it won't all go in.
