I feel very sorry for the newer contract people
Then they'll just keep leaving.
I know, RM aren’t bothered. :mad
RM are not bothered about new or old contracted staff, it's a case of if you don't like it there's the door
We've got 5 or 6 new starters lined in our medium sized DO, there seems a ready supply of workers prepared to replace staff who leave, RM are clearly replicating the Amazon model of a quick turnover of staff, although it seems far easier training somebody how to use a PDA to delivery some packets each day, than training posties to deliver mail on several different duties.

It has been Amazons business model from the start and RM are relying on a quick turnover of staff.

Pretty pathetic but very predictable

In the last few weeks our office has recruited a dozen new entrants. I'm not convinced we need them all but a transient workforce gives management more leverage with less union influence, fewer long term employment costs and a workforce that can be scaled up or down depending on demand. It's a classic "gigification" of what used to be a stable job by having a high turnover and constant recruitment to keep the pipeline full.

But more than that, the business is changing and RM are after a more flexible workforce that will do whatever's required - whether its delivering 2 or 3 days worth of mail, covering multiple rounds or parcel deliveries on a Sunday. They know the older, more experienced posties are less willing to accept these changes so the only way around it is to bring in new staff who will. The end goal is clear whether we like it or not: eventually we will all be expected to work the new model.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

RM are chasing the quantity not quality model and it's already showing signs it will be their downfall.
When customer's start comparing us to Evri on the parcel side and say the mail is clown show I feel ashamed of what RM has become.

The exact same thing that happened to City Link, they had the cream of work and went from delivering mobile phones for £10 profit to 30kg bags of dog food for 50p profit. Within 7 years the company was dead following exactly what I'm seeing happening at RM.

The way I see at it. It's not even Royal Mail anymore. They shouldn't even be allowed to use the Royal title. It is nothing like the job was even 3 years ago. Next year it'll be totally unrecognisable. I don't feel sorry for new starters. It's no difference from working for Amazon or the others. Like it or lump it. Its the 40/50 year olds who been there 20 years plus I feel for. All this s**t came just at the right time for me as I can now walk away. I really feel for my younger colleagues.

Exactly - RM motto might as well be - Imitate not Innovate
