Have a look at your mail tomorrow when out and you'll see how little is actually 1st classnorris9 wrote: ↑04 Feb 2025, 20:41Does anyone know what the average % of mail per day is 1st class?
I am imagining that there isn't going to be much and we'd be delivering the mail a lot like we will be delivering the parcels....drive and drop...
or will we still have enough mail to do loops...which will surely still be light, so therefore inefficient?...a lot of dead walking?

Re: Delivery Method Change?
Seen a figure of 10% bandied about...
With a 750 call delivery recieving 350-400 items you'd be looking at 35-40 ,1c letters. Multiply that over 2 frames add in all the tracked small parcels for the 2 deliveries it makes for a completely unachievable 'delivery' albeit driving around not walking.
On the other side of the aisle your 2 colleagues are prepping 4 D2Ds 3 days worth of 2c plus the 1c for that day plus the tracked small parcels. It all adds up to totally unachievable workloads even with 22 mins extra delivery time.
When our van shares at the moment have 2 days mail on just one side they clear that one plus the tracked off the other and don't even touch a letter on the 2nd frame.
The CWU are so removed from the frontline reality it is starting to become an absolute embarrassment

We often clear one frame that has 2 days worth of mail but it is surprising how time consuming it is to simply drive round delivering Tracked items and larger parcels on the other round when we aren't delivering any mail with it. We load up all the smaller parcels in trays and it's not uncommon to miss one and end up driving back round again.
It is actually far easier and makes more sense if you actually deliver everything but it requires more indoor time to prep and sort. However, RM are not keen to do this preferring to have a full-time and a part time postie on the shared walks.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Re: Delivery Method Change?
A few months ago now the DTS went screwy because an office somewhere ran a sequencing batch way to early, making the system think that all 1C had been run. With batches of 16-18 boxes, we we're banding up everything that went out as just about everything got deferred. We got everything into 2, maybe 3 trays each.jessicarabbit wrote: ↑04 Feb 2025, 20:52Seen a figure of 10% bandied about...

I don't think RM realise that in the autumn the CSS machines will reach maximum capacity for what can be run whilst meeting the dispatch times and there'll be some that can't go through the machines where they're over capacity. AFAIK we'd just have to send it as manual

Re: Delivery Method Change?
How do you think they'd want us to go about prepping and delivering the 1st class mail....
I assume it would be sorted into a frame, redirections done, bundled up into 1 or 2 bundles and then you just manage those letters like they are parcels - doing drop-offs.
It does seem like a faff for very little...people saying maybe 40 houses per round may have 1st class post per day?
It makes more sense to just go to a 'every other day' system for all mail and anyone who urgently needs to do next day delivery will just have to pay for special delivery. Doing the 1st class mail alongside parcels is surely going to be deemed inefficient.

To ditch the 6 day/week service would require a change in the law.
Slow, laborious and potentially impossible if the political will is missing.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Let’s compare with how it works today vs how I think it will workPHILOSOFER wrote: ↑02 Feb 2025, 08:17Please correct me if I got this wrong but won’t the proposed delivery method mean
3 days of 2c mail on walk A on Monday
3 days of 2c mail on walk B on Tuesday
Every other day being double 2c?
Now:
Monday posted 2c delivered Wednesday on both walks
Tuesday posted 2c delivered Thursday on both walks
Wednesday posted 2c delivered Friday on both walks
Thursday posted 2c delivered Saturday on both walks
Friday posted 2c delivered Monday on both walks
Saturday posted 2c (advanced) delivered Monday on both walks
In future, from my understanding :
Monday posted 2c delivered Wednesday on walk 1 and Thursday on walk 2
Tuesday posted 2c delivered Thursday on walk 1 and Friday on Walk 2
Wednesday posted 2c delivered Friday on walk 1 and Monday on Walk 2
Thursday posted 2c delivered Monday on walk 1 and Tuesday on walk 2
Friday posted 2c delivered Monday on Walk 1 and Tuesday on walk 2
Saturday posted 2c (not advanced?) delivered Tuesday on walk 1 and Wednesday on walk 2
RM need some better comms around the work plan and workload rather than just talking about what a duty structure looks like

Looks like I’ve got this wrong as both walks are still delivering 2c every day in my future scenarioposted wrote: ↑04 Feb 2025, 22:49Let’s compare with how it works today vs how I think it will workPHILOSOFER wrote: ↑02 Feb 2025, 08:17Please correct me if I got this wrong but won’t the proposed delivery method mean

You’ll have people expected to go into care homes and top floor flats with a Tracked48 titchy EBay packet when they would have ordinarily been going round the whole block with mail. Waste of time. Just have one guy deliver every product for the area everyday but ditch the mail on Saturdays.

Re: Delivery Method Change?
That's been mentioned but the sticking point is that would be a 5 day USO so what about delivering the 1c mail on Saturdays to satisfy the USO, I think that's also been mentioned but apparently only saves 50million as opposed to 300, perhaps they could have trialled that instead maybe as a starting point as even our managers could have worked out how to implement it as opposed to the proposed methodkazardaimenu wrote: ↑05 Feb 2025, 06:15You’ll have people expected to go into care homes and top floor flats with a Tracked48 titchy EBay packet when they would have ordinarily been going round the whole block with mail. Small tracked 48 should only be delivered with the whole duty IMO. They are second class after all.

Re: Delivery Method Change?
Has anyone mentioned the dreaded word LAPSING?
Is this going to be abolished, has the union even mentioned this?
Some lapsing in our office can take up to 1hr30 to 2hrs, others can take 20 minutes basically because of location so certain rounds have to be shared out over less duties.
Surely every round needs to be covered by bodies

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but if you’re in an office where you’re doing both duties and lapsing then yours is the type of office in for a massive shock come these changes.postiewhite wrote: ↑05 Feb 2025, 08:01Has anyone mentioned the dreaded word LAPSING?

You mean lapsing will basically stay in place?

Re: Delivery Method Change?
There won’t be lapsing as it is now but you’ll have your deliveries made so big that you’ll only do one side of mail and the tracked and first class off the other.postiewhite wrote: ↑05 Feb 2025, 09:59Oh dear.Pidleypoo wrote: ↑05 Feb 2025, 09:23Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but if you’re in an office where you’re doing both duties and lapsing then yours is the type of office in for a massive shock come these changes.postiewhite wrote: ↑05 Feb 2025, 08:01Has anyone mentioned the dreaded word LAPSING?

No idea how many duties your office has but you’ll lose a fair few imo.
I do think that offices that complete now and are clear are going to be hit hardest and for what it’s worth , I think that’s absolutely scandalous.
Just to add to this, it’s why it’s absolutely vital that the union listen and no matter what happens , we keep our start and finish times. None of this commit to deliver nonsense or ridiculous flexibility agreements that only ever work one way.
