Leaving packets with neighbours

Post by k979aaa »

Well the Postie neighbourhood dynamic has never been tested so far we all have different lives with some on nights or late's and yet some yob who wants his bonus insists on knocking on every door for first time delivery as we are below the required standard maybe he should do it and not talk about it!

Can I ask, because this happened to me last week, what is the correct procedure if the customer who is not at home sees you on their ring doorbell and asks you to leave it with the next door neighbour? I was unhappy to do it because I know for sure that the neighbour reluctantly does it but I did it anyway. Again, was this the procedurally correct thing to do ?

You try the neighbour.
If the neighbour refuses then the neighbour refuses.
Yes is the answer to your question.

The problem with ring doorbells is that people can’t accept that they’re out.

If I know the neighbour is unhappy to have their door knocked, I just say that I’m sorry but it is a packet that I can only deliver to them, the householder and I’ll just bring it back the next day.

However, I am someone who never knocks a neighbour. If they’re out, they’re out.

So it was a big no before and now they want you to do it to save on callers office staff? I only try it if the neighbour seems game, don’t want to be bothering people.

Knocking on neighbours’ doors is a required and expected part of most delivery jobs in the 21st century. I do it myself at least 20 times each weekday. Time spent today delivering first time — when you are stood outside the delivery point — is time, effort and company expense saved tomorrow in making “redeliveries”.

There are, I concede, very rare exceptions. A few weeks back, when I asked number 4 to take in a parcel for the lady at number 2, I was politely told, “Sorry postie, but not for her as she is horrible”. Undeterred, I tried number 6, where the lady told me, “I will take parcels for anyone on this street but not for that racist woman (expletive used) at number 2!” Even I have limitations to my powers of persuasion, and at this stage I conceded defeat and left a 739 as I suspected numbers 8 and 10 were likely to have issues with her too.

I would imagine 95% of rounds don’t have time to faff about knocking neighbours doors to get rid of parcels i know I certainly don’t. If they aren’t in it goes back to the office.

Depends what day it is for me and which duty I cover. Monday I have time to ask neighbours, sometimes on a Tuesday and Saturday. Not on other days, I cut off and just haven’t got the time. Just depends on the workload really.

I do hope the parcel wasn't damaged as a result of the postie not looking where he was going.

Isn’t that a Parcelforce hi-viz?
