18 years a postie this DM26 was the straw that broke the camels back or eventually it will break mine, so I leave in two weeks, I start a new job and can't wait, manager doesn't know yet though. Looking forward to breaking the news to them.

I think anyone who joined RM 20/25 years ago would rightly have looked at the 'old timers' of the day and thought 'I fancy a bit of that in a few years time'. The company aren't stupid, they knew that around 5 years ago they were looking at a bottleneck of tens of thousands of staff all hitting fairly long service around now and there is pretty much zero chance any legacy contract will be here in 10 years, such is the aggressiveness of the herd thinning. Just my take.

Yeah i started 25 years ago and there was alot of posties there then who started in 1960s/70s and learnt off those guys training on rurals and now I'm like those guys on my own rural and I'm 57 and 8 from the top on seniority list and like many others in last 10 years of royal mail but hoping leave before then!!!

Within 5 years it'll be a parcels only company which delivers the odd letter at a significant cost, our T&C's will match whatever Amazon are then offering.

Left a few months ago after more than two decades. I was so sick of the toxic environment and it was obvious the downward momentum was only going to increase.

Best thing I ever did. I never realised just how much it was taking it's toll on me mentally until I left. The way the company treat the staff and the customers is shocking and this new system is just another kick the balls to both!

There's a big world out there and a lot of jobs. My advice would be to take a look around and see what's available. Working for RM is no longer a well paid job for a reasonable amount of work. There are many jobs now that pay very close to RM wages without the unsociable hours and ridiculous work load. If you like it there with the new system then fair enough. But you are less trapped than you think financially now and there's no harm in looking. The only good thing about the rest of the unskilled jobs catching up with RM wages is the financial leap is no longer that big a gap!

More importantly, don't let the bastards get you down!

As a guess I'd say your around 40 years old, it's the 50+ who are going to find it hardest to get a new job.

I pulled the pin. Had done almost 40 years and was 2nd on senior list. However I took one look at the DM26 a decided that it was not worth it. Yes the pension is less than a full weeks money but the tax free lump sums go a long way if you dont spend them but invest and spread them.
I ve heard its not going well in my old office with the DM26 but its early days.
Myself I never realised how much stress the job was putting me under towards the end. I actually sleep at night much better esp on a sunday night.

The job used to have its perks like a midday finish and lighter summer mail which made it worth hanging in for. I think your prob better working for Tesco now.

Then You'd be wrong. I am in my mid 50s and I didn't say to quit first did I? No harm in looking though is there?

In my contract i was taken on as a walking postman just posting letters in a door ,now all the rules have changed and the job is more complicated than ever and im literally paid near minimum wage i have no clue on what is going on and am too old or clever enough to even think about it ,its all going right over my head ,so ill carry on as i am ,if they want ill just stay in and clean the floors with the cleaners who get paid the same.

The job certainly isn't great, but was it ever great ?

Start on time, take my full break, do the job exactly how RM want me too.

Finish on time go home and forget about it until the next day.

Imagine a world where workloads were more than achievable, everyone worked on their own, finished before dinner and didn't need to go back to the depot to drop parcels off nor bring a RM van back to the yard. It felt great back then to be a postie.

But times change and whether the new business model can work operationally or sustainably for the people working in it is another question. It feels almost cruel to say that some posties can't adapt mentally and physically to the increasing workloads or the idea that work appears to be getting on top of them. The easiest option for many will be to give up and call it a day.

But the other alternative is to simply work our contracted hours properly and safely and then go home and let managers worry about the ongoing chaos. We aren't responsible for trying to make this model succeed by exhausting ourselves.
