Well RM certainly don't pay vast amounts to train staff where I work, training is bare minimum for new starts and I feel sorry for them

So that means it can’t happen then?

It means it won't happen and even if by some miracle it did there would be very little uptake, if they wanted a driving license the majority would have done it by now.

Of course there would be a good uptake on Royal Mail training people to drive. The cost of driving lessons is probably the single biggest barrier for people.
My original point remains - 5 years ago when they started these ideas of parcels only days the CWU should have been banging RM's door down to get those who wanted trained, trained.

londonsburning, evidently the CWU don’t care as they would have been banging in the door to get people trained etc if they did.
I’d just be interested in their rationale behind disagreeing with some staff working MON-FRI. If it has been suggested by RM, then it’s clearly a business decision - they don’t want 2 in a van on a Saturday or people working indoors with no work to do.

I don't drive and would be happy to have Saturdays off. But I want to keep my wallington week off. I also sometimes work in another office that has no van shares as all the walks are near the office. What happens there on a Saturday? Just take the packets in the trolley like that odd time during covid where we all finished by 10am?

The answer is very simple, non drivers will be given the 1c letters and hitch a lift in the vans to do all the 1c letters in the office.

So Bob will take them out and they do the 1c letters on Bobs, then Lynn will pick them up and drop them to do the 1c there, then Zak will pick them up....

If it safeguards a current role (ie, walking postperson) then why are CWU allegedly objecting to some staff going Mon-Fri? Something doesn't add up.

For who?

For every person that is off every Saturday, there would need to be people who never get a Saturday off. RM would never sanction giving driving staff, regardless of their length of service, every weekend off.
