'The company' (IDS) does make money. Royal Mail doesn't. GLS is very profitable and has been for sometime. If this happens, we'd all better start working on our CV's. Billionares are billionares for a reason, and it's because they're ruthless bastards. GLS and Royal Mail will be separated, which is very very bad.

Re: Kretinsky making a bid ?
That is not how this works. Buy a company on its knees and then you slash and burn. He isn’t looking to make RM suddenly profitable after making a loss for the last 3 years, he wants a completely clean slate and to build the service again from scratch. Basically, not good for us.

It also makes you wonder if he is seeing an option to palm off the letter side of the business to the government and to separate the letter and parcel business completely. Have letters controlled by the government under the USO, while creating a separate company to handle the financially profitable parcels.
It is going to be an interesting few weeks either way.

Do not forget, the DBCBS is not classed as a pension . Just do the sums.Plenty of potential free money to pay for very expensive loophole lawyers.

The breaking news of an impending takeover bid for Royal Mail Group (IDS) by Daniel Kretinsky is another significant moment.
The truth is handing over the ownership of one of the UK’s most prestigious institutions to a foreign equity investor cannot be right. But neither is the current model or direction of the company.
The truth is Royal Mail needs a new ownership and governance model that builds a postal service for the workers and customers and not one built solely focused on shareholder payouts and driving down the service and the terms and conditions of the workers.
The CWU will be campaigning publicly and politically to deliver this change of direction.

Whenever anyone shrugs their shoulders about the objectionable actions of giant corporations or obscenely wealthy (and therefore powerful) individuals, I always picture a wolf dragging someone's baby into the forest and wonder if even then they say 'eh, wolf does what a wolf does'.Seymour Buts wrote: ↑17 Apr 2024, 17:57Billionares are billionares for a reason, and it's because they're ruthless bastards.
Not to worry, though, there's a union press release. We can sleep peacefully in our beds with the settlement of the Czechoslovakian problem.
The machine stops.

Unfortunately when asked what direction the CWU wanted us to head DW had no answer!!POSTMAN wrote: ↑17 Apr 2024, 16:44CWU RESPONSE TO BREAKING NEWS OF POTENTIAL ROYAL MAIL TAKEOVER

Re: Kretinsky making a bid ?
Either he knows the company has been run down on purpose and can make money in the future, or DK sees there's money to be made from splitting off RM from GLS and merging the latter with his own parcels co.
Assuming RM knew this offer was coming the appointment of the new CEO from Heathrow seems odd timing, just when it seems RM needed a strong CEO to fight the takeover, although perhaps putting somebody seemingly totally out of her depth is all part of the plan to allow the takeover?

Maybe direct your question to CWU headquarters?
Personally I think a nations core services should not be run for shareholder profit by foreign owners but that is the world we have become

I'm thinking along the same lines. Royal Mail's overall profits are down because they have spent billions over the last few years in parcel automation and super-hubs but are still forced to deliver the USO. GLS is currently more profitable even though it is a relatively small company with over 20,000 employees delivering parcels. Just imagine how profitable RM could be if it had the same business model as GLS? This must be what Kretinsky is thinking and why he's prepared to spend half of his own fortune in a takeover bid. He is obviously smelling blood in the water of the fact that our shares were nearly at 52 week lows which could see shares doubling in value - just like they did during the pandemic when we delivered more parcels and letters every other day. Whatever the reasons its certainly a very cheeky opportunistic bid of buying the company when its of very low value knowing that record profits could just be around the corner in a few years time.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Well it looks like the Royal Mail of the future will not be part of IDS, where that leaves Royal Mail is anyones guess
[/quote]
Surely this would be great news for all the union supporting workshy Marxist old timers who insist what a valuable and essential "public service" letter deliveries are and how the 6 day USO shouldn't be reduced?
It means IDS can go off and do its thing being a highly profitable and viable business, particularly due to GLS... whilst RM can remain as this apparently "essential" public service where profitability and commercial efficiency are unnecessary... and the workshy old timers can return to the working practices from days gone by that they're so desperate to see once again (ie half a days work for a full day's pay)
