Why do they ring outside and them a bit later ring inside?

I rarely ring doorbells. I find a good sharp rap on the door or window gets the prompt response.

I've never had a good experience using them, you always get through to someone who is totally surprised that the thing actually works, is normally too busy or distracted to decide what the best course of action is for their parcel and unprepared for the fact I can't just wait 5 minutes until they get back or come back later on.

RING2! See who has your parcel and watch it disappear into the Kafkaesque labyrinthine bureaucracy of a courier's
redelivery system.

For those of you refusing to use the Ring doorbell PLEASE AT LEAST KNOW WHY SOME ARE USED.

I’m disabled and often am stuck in bed with severe pain so being able to answer the door and tell the postman to put the package in a safe place or explain that I can’t reach the door fast if the package needs a signature is a real help. Plus I have repeater chimes in my kitchen where I cannot hear if someone just knocks on the door so spending over £100 on a doorbell only for the postman to refuse to use them is beyond frustrating... My car had less than 500 miles on the clock after 5 years (which shows how often I manage to get out) so having to go pick up the package after several re-deliveries failed because the postman refuses to use the bell... well, I really get angry about it.

I have to highest speed internet connection available (26gb) so the thing rings instantly. So it’s not like it rings late and also I only ever answer it via my phone if I can’t get out of bed or am going to be slow reaching the door.

Anyway, I only found out about this policy of not using them after I caught my postie knocking on the door again today. I was polite about asking him to use my Ring and he told me about the policy of not using them. I explained about being disabled and when I would only ever use it when I was slow to reach the door and he was nice enough to agree to use it in future. It’s lucky that I’m more active in summer (lower pain levels) that has let me get to the door reasonably quickly today.

So please, PLEASE, think about the disabled people out there who rely on these devices. Think about the insecure people like rape victims who need to see who is at the door before answering. Ring devices aren’t just there for “lazy” people, for some it’s an essential lifeline. They are also there to help the postman make the delivery as well (or do you like having to carry those heavy packages back to base).

Sorry for the semi-rant but the previous post about refusing to use them just got me riled up.

There is no policy about not using Ring or other brands of video doorbells.

NeoMorph's post above shows how they can be very useful for those unable to get to the door quickly.

There is no policy. But most seem to be owned by 30 something workers who answer and expect you to try all their neighbours, or try and get u to leave in blue bin or round back which is a no no. I'll happily wait for someone disabled. Let your regular postman know and he should put note on frame for people who cover him.

Best to leave a note by the door requesting people use your Video Doorbell, possibly stating why.

I personally avoid ringing them too TBH. It is usually a hassle. Postmen do not have time to waste, we are overworked and pretty much need to rush everything we do. At least that's what it feels like for me.

I have been at RM for a few months now and I have rung a fair few of those doorbells and not once has anybody answered, so I still have no idea what they actually do.

I think the problem with these is the time it takes for the ring to transfer to the mobile phone. If they genuinely take 30 seconds, then I'm already scribbling a 739 out and moving on by that stage. Haven't got time to mess about.

I have a few disabled on my walk they mostly have signs on their doors asking for you to give them time to answer, I don't normally press those RING door bells, but if I do I cover the camera lens with my mail.

Regular posties will usually know where there are disabled residents or older people maybe with walking frames that take longer to reach the front door. We will and do wait longer for people who we know will take longer to answer the door.
We generally don't have enough time to complete the job nowadays so something like the RING doorbells that potentially provide delays are not a welcome idea although there isn't a RM or union policy on them. Best advice would be for anyone who has concerns about receiving parcels to either talk to their postie in person, leave a letter for them on the front door, or contact their local delivery office either by phone or letter. We are not uncaring and will go 'the extra mile' to help customers who have difficulty walking or answering their door.

I probably should be more aware of these cameras as I am often mumbling to myself when people are taking ages to get to the door, or if someone has an annoying postbox that falls apart, is too small, is dangerous, is at the bottom of the door, is a pain in the butt to get anything through....
