Why do you think you should you get the duty above him? Not having a dig just curious.

Everyone knows duties are picked on seniority when you start the job. You might not agree with seniority now but I bet you do in 20 years. Sadly this doesn't fall into equal opportunity as it's an internal thing and your job is not at risk, you just won't have a regular round but you're still employed. It's been given the green light for years to pick duties this way and it's not going to change. So why do you think you deserve a duty over someone else? What would be your way to pick duties?

In the age of zero hours contracts and part time working the only thing stopping managers from ripping contracts up are things like seniority and unions, try coming into work and being told that there is no work for you today but maybe if you come in tomorrow there maybe some part time hours or a 2-10 shift in the next town. You may feel discriminated against because you haven't been around for long but keep your head up and when the next sign or a walk become vacant choose,it doesn't take long really and I think is the fairest way round things.
I see what your saying and yes we are all lucky to have contacts and full time work. Like I said a few posts back I'm looking for anything that could help me get a foot up and yes it's selfish and unfair of me to want a walk above someone else , but at the end of the day I have no reasons to leave so this is my job fur the coming years and I would like to secure myself something even if it came down to it a cover duty.

I know the system and Royal Mail very well and enjoy my job otherwise I would of never chosen to be a postman a 2nd time around. Maybe it's the fact I would of been around 25/30 if I never left the first time around .

Because we are all employed under the same skill set requirements and therefore should all be capable of doing the job assigned to us as a employee regardless of age or time served.

I have done 30 years in this job and started bottom of the list, worst duties and what ever holidays were left. In our office now seniority for holidays has gone and it is a straight pick with one week at a time .That is fair for holidays and I have no gripe with it.Why shouldn't workers who show commitment to the firm get a choice for their working day if one is available ?
To be honest there isn't a lot between the best and worst duties in our office but it is nice to choose and not have it allocated on brown nose ability.

It is if you don't agree with it, or the only choice you have to is live with it.
tomdub85 wrote:and I have no future plans of putting a solution forward and it's not my job to do so and it like many things will fall on def ears .
If you don't agree with a system that's been in place for many years and has majority support then, yes it is your job to come up with a better system, or work within it.
tomdub85 wrote:I know it's an argument I'll never win but just really trying to see if anyone has been able to bend the rules or get around it and as selfish as it sounds jump up the list .
Try using the rules and the internet to research employment policies, there are plenty of legal ways to use the system, but you have to do the research as no-one knows if a particular situation is applicable to you.
tomdub85 wrote:Like I said before this is the next few years of my working life being decided by a list
Welcome to the life of a working postman, there are plenty of lists as we all have to abide by them.

I am afraid you have earned the vitriol you have received on this thread as you have already confessed to being selfish, but by not researching something that appears so important to you, you are in danger of being considered lazy as well.

PS even if you base your research on this website there is plenty of information available.

We have been van sharing for a few years now and I very much doubt my Dom will allow people to choose their partners in this way , we have a few couples working in the office and for them to stay together the lower seniority partner has to give up there position and drop down until it's there partners turn to pick allowing them to stay together. My partner has gone for a driving role so will be working alone anyway.

I'm going to argue and argue this out with the Dom / managers this is the next few years of my life I would like some stability not working all over with different people everyday and doing 80% the work while a part timer turns up bags up and sits in the van while I rush around doing oversize and organise everything . Being Punished for being efficient is going to be no longer I'll be working to my time if I get messed around .
The part timer would probably tell a different story about how they turn up for their 4.5 or 5 hr duty to find that the full timer hasn't thrown their walk out and they still have an hours work to do before they can get out and how they are doing their bigger (walking) loops whilst the full timer sits in the van playing with his phone, chill out tomdub85 we have all had to go thru this senority isn't a new thing,a few years ago it was a lot worse when they used to allocate holidays on seniority.

Our office is well overdue a re-pick - or at the very least some of the duties need to be advertised on the boards

And its primarily because when a full-timer left on VR terms, they put a newbie on that round and never took them off it! Thus, you get some guys that have only been a postie for 3 years working on a fixed duty whilst you get some that have been here for 10 years working as bl***dy floater week in, week out!!

Our union reps are not much cop at our depot, after all they got their own rounds to worry about anybody else's. But I do feel for some of the guys. I think what is preventing a re-pick is that some posties on relatively good duties just don't want a re-pick - whilst others who are leave reserves/floaters or spares desperately want a change.

Can't really argue with the seniority list though. Rewarding staff who have had unbroken service seems very fair to me, after all we all remember having to work different duties on different days years ago....
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

We do all do the same job, the duty is not classed as the job so that argument is irrelevant. The job is to be a postal worker not a specific round that's just a little perk for senior people. I'm not high up but I agree with it, it's fair, why should a new bloke walk in the door and get the best duty? Serve 20 years and then see if you think it's still unfair.

I wouldn't take permenant duty if it was gift wrapped, been there done that. I'd much rather float, I tend to be given the hard duties, I don't care. I just do my best on the day but finish on my time and roll on tomorrow. No responsibilities or regular customers to worry about.

We're going through a repick as well and have had a few opg giving the same argument as yourself. Unless you can come up with a better system then you'll get nowhere and I don't think there is a better way than seniority.

Regarding your comment above about the rep getting that easy duty, if it was that good why wouldn't any of the 14 other opg pick it? People pick duties for different reasons, we've had quite a few picks that have surprised some in the office, but thats life, you never know there might be a duty left to pick when it gets to you, but you might not want it as it's the worst duty in the office.

My question to the OP is how you do you think the duties should be allocated? I would be genuinely interested
