The reason for the later starts was that Royal Mail ceased to use planes to carry mail which means that it arrivals later to the inward mail centre.

Royal Mail would love a 9-5 model for parcels but the union has stopped this now on four occasions dating back to 2017.
And in an astonishing coincidence, pushing the times back also allowed them to connect almost all T24 onto core delivery. At least up here in the Central Belt, where, I might add, 9-5 is one more push away.
The next day delivery requirement was definitely part of the justification for the later start times. It's what customers want!

Not to mention that offices would be splurging a very high % of their weekly OT budget on one day, leaving less for the other 5 days.
Be no need for any Monday to Friday overtime everyone would be in 🤪

Unforeseen overtime will always exist, extended delivery, unexpected bulk mailing, someone phones in sick, etc. There will be little 'day off' overtime in any new system given that offices must be fully staffed.

Would you do overtime on a Saturday?

Very good Martin, but it's about the only thing you've stopped.
In fact you could probably use that fag packet the managers use to write it all down.

Yes the model is more Saturdays off as only 1st class letters and parcels are required to be delivered.

Discussions are ongoing over whether the 1st class should just come in raw to the Delivery office so it would arrive earlier. Remember first class only accounts for 8% of Royal Mails total letter volume.
Martin that's not correct. The workload on the day will be whatever tasks have to be done that day. If an item has reached it's time limit it will be that days work. You also constantly ignore everything else we do. The redeliveries will be part of the days work, the special deliveries, the COLOD, the van check. We don't just deliver 1st class letters.

Saturdays off a year does that mean 20 a year then 26 weekdays on top?.I got a feeling my office will want us in the 26 weekdays as 4 in 3 not enough staff.
The rotation the CWU members choose is what will be the duty pattern . If you choose 9 day fortnights the TM1 will be based on that choice. Members should vote for what they want not what they think is achievable.

On paper, it sounds great talking about more Saturdays off but if offices are struggling for staffing then you can easily see this happening. And with Saturdays also being promised as a shorter day that only makes the staffing issue even harder if all the Tracked and priority work still has to go out.

At some point the workload has to land somewhere and most posties are wondering whether that means the remaining staff are expected to absorb more work or stay out longer.
The duty patterns are designed to fit the workload. The reason Saturday attendances are shorter is that the workload 'should' fit the duty span. Of course if there is spare capacity thats going to be used. DM26 see the return of clear offices being the standard. That's no bad thing.

Stop telling us what Royal Mail want , as if we should be grateful for what we have , it’s a ridiculous stance to keep taking.

That’s almost where you’ve left all of us in Scotland with a 4.30 finish. So I don’t see what you’ve got to sit there congratulating yourself on. We were told there would be negotiations on moving the start times earlier again but as usual with this union all talk no action.

Him Ward and the other higher up officers have been sitting around eating biscuits on inflated wages for so long that in fairness to them it must be impossible to put themselves in our shoes.
Imagine your Ward for a moment, haven’t done a delivery in decades, your salary is 150k per year and your job is to sit in perfect temperature meeting rooms and pontificate with other people on equally high salaries on how you can “expand the role of the postal worker” and other ridiculous notions. They are so far removed from the people they represent it’s untrue. Forget a reset in industrial relations, we need a reset with the relationship between the union and its members plus a salary cap on the likes of Ward and Walsh.

I don't think any of the union higher ups have worked in either a MC or a DO for many years. They don't have any understanding of how MCs or DOs actually work. I suspect that there are no 2 DOs anywhere who work in exactly the same way. Every DO probably has a slight variation of how they do something.

The same customers who are never in when you deliver it next day with no safe place or any neighbours being in either.

430pm pitch black walking about in winter. Heatwaves( as we are seeing happening more with the climate) . Health and safety martin ? Our workloads have increased big style last few years. Even the last few weeks the packets are hugely up , having to deliver second attempt parcels , collections postboxes and customers , safe places have risen, deliver to neighbours, collect plus to and from shops/ petrol stations etc, more parcels more notice lefts to write out / more waiting. Im sure theres more we can add on , but it all takes time away from you to complete . The late times youre pushing are disgusting, many will be forced to leave. Well done,,,,

Im pretty sure most people on DPR who are working from 2pm to 8pm, Monday to Saturday would love a 9-5 model too. That’s not even mentioning their Sunday shift.
Why would the CWU try to stop this?
