People go and collect their mailSpacePhoenix wrote: ↑25 Oct 2025, 21:27I think for letters and flats it might end up with some sort of hub where people collect their mail from, with only packets being delivered.
Do you reckon that was around about when MCs started sending 1C and 2C in separate trays both from outward MC to inward MC and from inward MC to DOs?TopperGas wrote: ↑25 Oct 2025, 19:40What's a bit surprising is the company's recent decision to start delivering 1c mail daily when since COVID it's been allowed to just remain in the frame with 2c/DSA mail until we get around to delivering it, it's clear somebody is now concerned about the ever increasing OFCOM fines &/or customers complaining..

Long term I think either the government will take over the delivery of letters and flats or the delivery of letters and flats will be axed. When you think about it, most letters and flats are DSA and probably a good chunk of that will probably be sent via email or downloadable by people eventually.

I can't believe the amount that the NHS send out, I deliver to a dentist and a health centre, they both get a pile each day, all could be emailed.SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑26 Oct 2025, 08:37Long term I think either the government will take over the delivery of letters and flats or the delivery of letters and flats will be axed. But a lot of the older generation can't/won't/don't use electronic means of communication. I know a lot of olds on my round who can no longer physically use their smart phones, computers or sign for stuff on the PDA because of arthritis, rheumatism in their fingers etc. It might happen in the future but as we're still in transition from non-digital native generations to digital natives then there's still going to be mail for a bit.claretandblue wrote: ↑26 Oct 2025, 09:03I can't believe the amount that the NHS send out, I deliver to a dentist and a health centre, they both get a pile each day, all could be emailed.SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑26 Oct 2025, 08:37Long term I think either the government will take over the delivery of letters and flats or the delivery of letters and flats will be axed. A bit off topic but talking about digital natives, my daughter messaged me from uni asking what the weather was going to be like - sent her a link to the BBC Weather site......

Apparently the Blood Donor service decided to email appointments but had to go back to letters when donors failed to turn up, it's easy to overlook an email not so easy to overlook a blue NHS letter or a red Blood donor service letter. People also change or don't check their emails they usually check/bin their mail daily

the future is its only gonna get worse for us posties, i dont think royal mail give a toss about 20 million fine when there making a lot more that be peanuts to them, the future points to even less letters getting delivered anywhere near on time with royal mail taking out more contracts, build more machines for parcels to shoot out at a record speed and decrease the staff to just concentrate on parcels and the odd letter day, don't be naeive to think there going get every walk covered every day to get the letters out, if anything the future will probably be half the duties covered one day and half the other day on a good day without sickness

I'm talking about the NHS sending letters to the other parts of the NHS, my Mrs had an hospital appointment, the results were sent by letter to her doctor and dentist.yellowbelly wrote: ↑26 Oct 2025, 10:07But a lot of the older generation can't/won't/don't use electronic means of communication. Sounds like the odm, apparently the trial offices are still failing, maybe they'll carry on implementing it anyway after Xmaspostmanplod2025 wrote: ↑26 Oct 2025, 10:32if anything the future will probably be half the duties covered one day and half the other day on a good day without sickness

Re: What do you all really think the future is.
In the next few years, there will be more operational "tinkering" mainly towards an alternate day pattern for the bulk of the letters with 1c and NHS letters being pushed daily along with most parcels. Regarding the ODM there won't be a one-size-fits-all approach in delivery offices but there will be more delivery office consolidations wherever possible.
In 5 years time parcels will still continue to be done in 2 shifts (AM and PM) but perhaps with better automation upstream? It doesn't make any sense that we are still segregating most parcels that arrive in our delivery office into the various sections. Surely, if Kretinksy plans to invest millions in parcel lockers, wouldn't he also choose to maximise our indoor workload efficiency in the longer term as well?
Real changes on the shop floor are often slow and those awkward conversations between manager and postie over achievable workloads will continue as management are still bonus-led and performance driven. We know they want to bring in more performance management via the PDA. They have brought in these tools and SISO (scan in-scan out) which they want to link to pay for a reason, but that still won't stop the unpaid heroics masking the gaps.
The real danger for RM in chasing a pure parcel race is that it risks becoming just another courier in a red van. The competition is the gig-economy and our only unique selling point, however much it's declining, is letters. Despite what the company says, no business wants to scrap something that still brings in billions of revenue every year - they just want to milk it dry. So expect continued price increases in letters and more of them being delivered late. A £21 million fine by Ofcom is trivial when IDS makes around £9 billion a year in revenue.

The current ownership will say it's no longer delivering letters within the next 5 years. The incumbent government will push back against it initially , but ultimately realise that Royal mail won't be delivering letters anymore. RMG will then gift the letters side to the government and they will have to accept it as the embarrassment of not having a postal service would be unacceptable . Then Kretinsky will be the cat that got the cream

Factor in the reality of a potential Reform government and that's perhaps not even close to a worse case scenario given that they want a US-styled insurance based system to secede the NHS; Farage is a free market absolutist and won't give a toss about the service any more than he cares about the mugs that voted him in. One thing is for sure and is borne out by everything RM has implemented post-privatisation, things will ONLY get worse.
