Various ideas have been floated, none of which make any real sense apart from going out in a shared van but taking 60-70% more work than a single van driver, to account for inefficiencies.
All totally avoidable when you remember back to 2020 and the dropping of letters from a Saturday. Fast forward 5 years and we are at 2nd class mail every other day - the CWU should have been proactive and pushed for free driving lessons for those that wanted them at the very start of any ideas to drop a 6 day letter service.

The free driving lessons stopped at the end of the financial year in 1986 (March/April)
I had a provisional license then and applied for the lessons but I missed it by two months as I started in June

Companies, including Royal Mail spend vast amounts on training every year. Absolutely nothing to have stopped CWU/RM offering it again.

That's the last of our worries, trust me non-drivers will be doing double mail 5 days per week.

It’s already happening on occasions.
Some days our non drivers are being taken off to do double mail on another duty and then go back to double mail on their own duty…and repeat.

Well RM certainly don't pay vast amounts to train staff where I work, training is bare minimum for new starts and I feel sorry for them

Of course there would be a good uptake on Royal Mail training people to drive. The cost of driving lessons is probably the single biggest barrier for people.
My original point remains - 5 years ago when they started these ideas of parcels only days the CWU should have been banging RM's door down to get those who wanted trained, trained.

I don't agree with your opinion that the majority would take up the offer of driving lessons, some would for sure but there just isn't the need for anyone with decent transport links in urban areas.

You say for a lot of people cost is a barrier for not having a license and your right but it's 12 years since RM required new starts to have a license and many of the older nondrivers were there long before that, if they haven't thought about saving up for a license in 12 plus years it's obvious the desire isn't there.

Also 5 years ago RM was skint as it apparently is now, they were not and will not pay out for lessons when natural wastage will end the problem for free
