Had a lesson in our local pouch boxes off my van share only a few weeks ago. He admitted he’d give anything to go back to those days.

So did you get dropped off and then walk from box to box? Or was your whole walk in one of those boxes?

Were you also jumping on and off buses during this time?

Box to box, they were set up to be at the start/end or half way between each bag.

We also used local shops to keep bags in - only had one box for the whole round!
Then pouch off (parcels and recorded letters etc to go back) to nearest PO (remember them) then go home
Lightest days Tuesdays 9:00-930am finished - heavy days finish 1130-1200 - those were the days!!!!

Yup, pretty obvious answer to be fair.

Maybe mopeds and side cars is the route they should go down. Probably be a cheaper alternative.

Or here's a better idea, maybe RM should allocate 6-8 posties to an old Sherpa van and let them use grey boxes to replenish their bags to deliver around their walks. The Sherpa drivers could even drop off the bags and deliver the larger packets as their duty!

Ah the good old days, how the drivers would moan about the parcels.......sometimes they could have three or four to do

We were encouraged to find houses in our route that might have a lockable shed or similar.
They would be paid £50 a year or something like that.
We had the grey boxes, shops, house sheds, side of house cubbies, basically anywhere with a lock.
I was a driver of the crew buses, we would drop all the posties, then the bags, and then usually firms and oversize.
Most of the time posties would take their cars and even drop first bag themselves so they knew they had it in time.
Out at 6.50, done for half 9, break, then a few letters on second delivery, home at 12 if you were unlucky, most of time overtime mopping up 2nd deliveries or half walks from morning due to sick.
Still home for 2 and paid till 5 or 6.
Ah, those were the days.

When we had 2nd delivery most of the routes initially relied on either cycling out or going out with the van driver who would also drop multiple bags into the grey boxes or the local shop/post office.

Sometime after Single Daily Delivery we were allowed to use our own private cars if we had business insurance and load all the bags in the boot. The driver took the larger parcels and anything slipped left in post offices. Best time to be a postie

At least everything got delivered!!! Back in the day If you left one letter in the frame they’d have you in the office and threaten you with the conduct code

I remember being told I was going on a stage 1 as a nectar card statement (the small square purple ones) had been found squeezed right at the back of the frame.

As for van drivers etc dropping posties off, I used to do that and it actually worked quite well although back then you might have 20 parcels to do. I can’t help but feel a 3 seater van, with you dropping off 2 walkers and covering any non letterbox sized parcels would work so much better. Rounds wouldn’t feel so unachievable for the walkers because they wouldn’t be knocking on every 10th house with a parcel. The driver wouldn’t be faffing about with 1st class letters, only parcels, and you could follow an exact set route so RM can give accurate delivery times. Local agreements with the 3 either sticking on their specific role (driver or walker) or swapping every week. People stay in the same area (local knowledge). Reduced number of vans required. Less messing about having to sort 1st class separately on IPS or however it’s intended. If a walker is done first, they help the parcel driver, and vice versa.
