Yeah, as others said, if you can do it financially etc, don't look back! I wouldn't mind being a binman instead of 5 days full time as a postie, sick of 1 in 6 Saturdays off and always knackered!

The fact that you went and applied elsewhere tells you what you need to know about staying at RM. I left a few years ago, took a gamble that didn't pay off - but now in a part time job where I negotiated my own contract hours. Not as much money as at RM, but the stress level is around 0.1% of what RM was!

I would think that being a binman would be equally as physical as RM. Loads of walking as well as pulling heavy bins around. As mentioned above, some of them do actually run around their 'walk'!

I think the difference is it's done over 4 days not 5 which as we all know would make a massive difference to a person especially as they are getting the appropriate rest. I know myself when I've had a long weekend (every 6 weeks in my office) how much better I feel after a 3 day break. That would be every weekend in that job. That appeals to me.

I think we will have a head start because of the amount of walking a postie does. My mate does the garden bins and they can be heavier than the trash bins however it's certainly not as smelly and you generally work in better weather.
I think what appeals to me is the 4 day week, that in itself is better on the body and if you take into consideration they do 4 days instead of 5 for only 9 months of the year (7.5 months after annual leave) you are practically attending 5 months less in a year than RM for £80 a week less which I'm sure can be made up somehow. I just don't know what is around the corner in our current job, it's never getting better
Agency work never has the same conditions as someone who is employed by the council and I feel a lot of the agency staff never take the job seriously anyway.

If your on the crappy new contract it's a no brainier, go for it,.. this job is just getting worse and they analyse almost everything we do.. if you don't take it you will be regretting it in a month or two.. soon as I find a job more suited for me I'm off..

Definitely winter is getting longer & more difficult as you get older

This for sure, I'm in my sixties now and I often think what the hell am I doing at my age walking with heavy bags in the frezzing cold, the rain the snow just for a fraction above min wage.. definitely made a few wrong life choices somewhere along the line!

Some councils run their own refuse services and employ their own binmen. Many others, perhaps the majority, contract it out to the likes of Veolia etc. Many if not all use recruitment agencies all year round.
