Counting steps???

Steps (stair like) or steps (walking pace) as usual very poorly written. Flights of stairs still a hard one for management. IF this is being used for revisions - for our benefit, then so be it. Use data from last revisions - oh dear theyve lost it.

I thought it was commonly known planners were creating walks based on the saving of hours told to them by area managers? How big the round is doesn’t come into it

Counting steps...could there be a more meaningless measure for the job??

As an individual, OK it gives me half an idea of how one day has stacked up against another. And whether a day has actually been mental or just felt mental.

But....I am a gangly giant with stupidly long legs. With no effort in a set period of time I can cover more ground than a short person (or even an average height person!)
Or if me and A.N. Other each took exactly 100 steps in a given direction, I would easily travel 25-30% further.

Proven by taking a shorter friend with me when walking the dog and putting a step counter on both of us. (Yes I have done this but it's good banter when 'giants' and 'little people' are good friends )

Same distance traveled, same time taken, my step count is always about ⅓ lower...I imagine with his 5" short legs, even if he walked in something resembling a straight path, the dog's step count would have been at least 20x higher.

If I make an effort cut my stride, or deliberately slow down to match whoever I'm with I get told off for taking the piss. And I really do look and feel like I am....and quite frankly feel so off balance I'm more likely to trip, fall and injure myself.

Meanwhile I walk at a reasonable plod at work and get hassled and ripped to shreds by colleagues, union rep, (and my 'manager' when he's fed up of hearing them accusing and complaining about me) of being a 'runner'
I haven't done anything resembling running since I was at school and P.E. was compulsory!!


Anyway just my thoughts and the same rant I've been having to have for over two years. For no reason at all.

If they want nonsense like step counts to mean anything maybe RM should just hire posties within a particular narrow height range. I suggest 5'8 - 6'2.

Haha loved reading that, sounds like a similar dry sense of humour to me, yes what a pointless exercise, and even more so when they provide us with an electronic device that almost as if by magic could provide them with the required info regarding distance covered

Up until a few months ago we were told to count and add to a sheet the number of letters in each post box we emptied. An utterly ridiculous exercise which about 2 people out of 150 did.

I agree with the previous poster - I am an incredibly fast walker because my legs are very long, I’ve always walked fast no matter where I am or regardless of if I’m in or out of walk. In the space of 24 hours I’ve been told I’m too slow and too fast. I get told off by one duty holder for walking too fast and getting one round done with minimal overtime, then the next day I’m told I’m lazy and not working fast enough by another duty holder because I didn’t clear it (I don’t cut corners). I can’t win, thankfully I quietly quit a year and a half ago and do what I want (within reason of course)

We didn't have to count actual steps between delivery points but steps/stairs upto front doors and in blocks of flats etc

I find that the more farts I do the quicker I go. Think the air must propel me forward like a jet engine.

Do you go up two at a time? It's steps as in stairs. The exercise is to obtain data on elevation changes at each delivery point. As you correctly point out, counting steps would be dependent on stride - which would completely useless subjective data. Although I could see the company a few years down the line ranking everyone by stride.

I was actually surprised coming out of one delivery point and entering the next totalled almost 100 steps. That was a front and back duty.

I’m trying to think if I have any actual stairs or steps on my delivery but I don’t think I do as there are no flats. One of the estates has massively long drives, which, at 6ft3 I am going to get around with less steps by design. Given they now have accurate topography data for revisions, they can get distances from that anyway.
