I’ve always rang in as soon as I know I’m going to be off.For short illness periods I’ve then contacted the manager the day before I come back. Never had any problems in 30 years plus.

You don't go sick with the cold.
You go sick because you have symptoms that mean you're not fit for work. What it actually might be is no more than a guess unless you have a doctor's diagnosis and therefore pretty meaningless.
I never guess at what might be wrong when talking to a manager, I just tell them the symptoms, If they ask what it is I tell them I have no idea because I'm not a doctor, too many managers think that specific illnesses have a set amount of "normal" absence days.

Re: Manager has asked me to call in everyday whilst on sick
Had exactly the same from my bullying line manager. He was very aggressive, hardly allowing me to talk on the first day I phoned in sick, and demanded I phone him every day otherwise I wouldn’t get paid. I hadn’t had a day off sick for about 6 years. The next day I phoned him, exactly the same treatment ie he wasn’t bothered one bit about me, just wanted to not have the problem of covering my round.
On the third day I rang him and he was almost demanding I come back to work the next day, well or not. Unfortunately for him I had recorded the phone call this time, and told him that his behaviour was inappropriate and that I was recording the call on my phone. What a change in his tone that brought, he was all nice and asking if I was feeling better and to take my time coming back to work!
Too f*****g late I’d recorded his bullying, which he did to everyone. Return to work interview he was as nice as pie, and now keeps his distance from me, although he asked me if I still have the recording to which I said YES!

Wasn’t there someone in this forum who, after being told to ring the manager every single day, starting ringing at something like 11pm or 4am? After that I believe they were told to stick to communication by text
The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

You are allowed to phone in on Friday or Saturday and say you are coming in on Monday. As Saturday and Sunday will be added to sick time. But if you take 7 days off, then after 6 months you are only allowed to take 6 days off. Then sick 7 days after that.

If they want you to ring in just do it as long as your not bed bound or have to pay for the calls .They are dicks, just play them at their own game .Oh and give them a ring to ask if it's ok to pop out to the shops or walk the dog they will soon get fed up.

What I've found to work well when you're manager is an arse and an absence is for anything more than a particularly nasty cold, is to request another manager to manage your absence.
Only one manager in my office so has to be outsourced to another office. That manager is too busy dealing with their daily clusterphuk they don't bother you when you least need to deal with idiots
