Anyone done Jury Service. Need advise on wage claim.

I once delivered to a bloke who trained guide dogs for the blind. He never had to do jury service.

jury service is fairly easy to get out of, just make up an excuse. Friend of mine went to a doctor and said hes been having insomnia and wouldnt be fit for jury duty and signed him off. Doctors can sign you off for a number of things. You could always say you biased towards certain cases aswell in court or prejudiced. I would go the doctors appointment route tbh,covid is also an excellent excuse. i would never waste my time doing that pointless crock of s**t

Just remember that should you be unfortunate enough to have something happen to you which results in the offender ending up before a jury, you may be very grateful for their involvement.

Why is it with a minority of people that everything should be done by someone else? They're always big enough to gob off about everything but when it comes to actually doing something, that's then down to others.

I did JS a few years ago and it was a nice change - MON-FRI for 3 weeks, no early mornings, full pay, and I would do it again no hesitation.

If i was in such a position i would rather a jury of people who actually want to be there not being inconveniently forced there. Its ridiculous

I was once cited for jury service. The "least offensive" of the 8 charges was that he had urinated in his children's mouth.
Screens were set up for the children to give evidence.
I wasn't selected. Many of those who were selected were in tears.
I don't think life would ever be the same for them again.

A colleague of my partner spent 3 months on a fraud case. She says they didn't really understand what the defendant had done, never mind if he was guilty or not.

Personally I think it should be a profession.

So let me get this right
The jury service pay you £65 a day so (£650 over the ten days) and then I bank transfer that back to Royal Mail because they loaned me the wages??
What happens to the shortfall because RM pay me more?
I don't get how it's done regarding giving RM the money back

I believe you pay back the RM amount, not the Jury service amount - as RM loaned you money while you attended Jury Service.

Check in with Sheffield Wages and ask for Geoff (I think).

I was told that I should not lose out on any money and that the way it's done then RM make up the short fall. Jury will pay me £650 over the two weeks and Royal Mail wage before tax will be around £900 (or £740 after tax) for the two week period.
I still don't get it though because the jury money is clearly less than my wage but like I say the shortfall is made up somehow. I just don't know how!!

If you can get into the People App and then go to 'RMG People Policy plus key documents' then go to 'Time Off and Holidays' then
'Time Off Work' - jury service and the administrative procedure is explained in some detail on pages 19 - 22. Can't seem to download it or copy
the text otherwise would have posted it up. It seems to suggest that RM pay you (as normal) including assigned allowance
and average of last 13 weeks OT. The court gives you a set amount of dosh and you have to pay that (court) dosh to RM.
If that (court) dosh is less than your RM wage, then RM take the hit. That's the way I'm reading it.

HR told me I need to get an invoice from the court on my last day and then send that on to Royal Mail Jury services in Sheffield.
The initial 'Loss of earnings form' the courts send me in the pack,I have not even handed in yet and I'm coming to the end of the jury service. My manager emailed this form to HR BEFORE I started the jury service and she's not even had it back yet as I need to hand it to the court. This form was supposed to be handed in on my first day !!! The court did say I have 12 months to submit this loss of earnings form though.

It all seems a farse. Also tomorrow looks like my last day at court so basically got Friday free. Do I go to work or wait til Monday?

A guy in our DO said something racist on his first day of jury service and was right back in work the next day...

Also the reason you have to do it without ever signing up for it, is because "professional" jurors would attract a certain type of person and you at least want the veneer of trust that random selection brings (it's harder to sway or bribe a jury if you don't know who they are until the trial starts)

To be fair it's overrun til tomorrow anyway so the choice was out of my hands.
I loved it, seriously beats walking around in the wind and rain for a couple of weeks and if you get on a case then it's an experience.
I actually got a case to take me potentially til the end of May and now into June but I've a holiday booked at the beginning of may so had to tell them. Imagine not going to work til the summer?!!!!
If anyone gets the chance then they are lucky.
Days can be long, until 4.30 some days, other days it's an early bath. You get looked after well by the ushers and judges

There is literally no stress, my levels have been zero and you get to know people after a couple of days and form groups to chat about stuff. Nice proper lunch breaks for a full hour or more. Some went to have proper meals like Thai or pub meals that were close to the court

Mine was OK as I had a particularly favourable case of GBH.

You do get to know your fellow jurors as well, but equally once someone has a view or made up their mind about guilty/not guilty then there's not much room for movement in their decision.

Overall it was OK and I probably could have done an extra case ,but I wasn't called from the pool of available jurors.
