I started when I was 16 with the intention of only being here for a year or two but here I am, still here 22 years later
My last week this week though, finally got a new job after months of applying. Still not sure if it’s the right decision but also know that I don’t have another 30 years in me to stay. I think institutionalised is a strong word, this has been a good job for many years for many people so get why people stay
Started age 19 and will be 55 this year.
I probably have been institutionalised but don't really want to admit it, and I think that applies to many of us who've been in the job a long time.
Pending a major change of mind, I will go in the next few months, probably before the latest revision and the sh!tshow that will inevitably happen.
In some ways staying would be an easier decision, because I'd just be continuing with the status quo. But I've put myself in a position to go and I intend to.
There's more to work than RM and there's more to life than work!

I did some work before joining RM at 19 and compared to my previous jobs it was actually great as the late 80s and early 90s is a brilliant era to be young and getting started in life.

Joined Royal Mail at 21 now 58, it was a good job 25+ years ago. You could have a good laugh in work and the managers knew how to manage, over the years morals gone through the floor and as for the so called managers I’m not gonna comment as the ones in my office are an absolute waste of money and not fit or able enough to do the job.
Remember 1st delivery out the office by 645 back by 930. Meal break and a bit of sorting.2nd delivery started at 1045 and back to the office midday latest. It all started to slide when they stopped the 2nd post about 2004.
Nah. Been there 4 years. I enjoy it. Wholeheartedly.
However. I don't wanna be doing it until I retire. I don't wanna be the crusty old OPG on the alley, whinging and lamenting for the good old days, and telling the younger folks how good it used to be and how bad it is now, while at the same time not doing anything about their situation.
I don't want to have no aspirations, and to suddenly hit retirement and wonder where it all went.
So I retrained. I got my Class 1 HGV hopefully will have a new, better paid, more enjoyable job in the next few weeks.
I think once you hit that target age where you can actually walk away it takes away a lot of the pressure and to be blunt you stop giving a f**k.
The job is much more bearable when you know you're pretty much bulletproof and you can just laugh at managers.
Quiet a few guys have left our office over the past year and I think they were pretty nervous about leaving. They all had a good few years in the job all in double figures but really couldn’t put up with the daily crap so off they went. When you meet them now they say best thing they have done.
I have done the unthinkable & applied for another job. Place is in the same town (so walking distance),same sort of money (i’m FT),with similar hours as I currently work but early finish Friday with no weekends.
Position closed yesterday & I’m checking my emails more than I though I would to see if I’ve got the nod for an interview
Dont make the same mistake i did and make sure you check your spam email folder too, i missed an interview because i never checked my spam folder but was checking my inbox every hour in the hope i got the chance of an interview.Needless to say the interview date had already passed by the time i saw the email
Job has been good to me but I think I will have to get something else soon to see me to retirement. Our pay isn’t great anymore now other jobs have started to catch up, I’m thinking maybe get something that pays a couple of grand less that doesn’t knacker my body up, doesn’t involve Saturdays and doesn’t involve a stand up argument if I dare to want to go home on time.

Nope only been here 6 years and i will leave happily when the job becomes s**t. I do not wear being a postman as a badge and a personality trait like alot of people i work with. I am here for money if the job becomes not worth it then i leave and take my skills elsewhere

I got a text message on Friday from the company asking me to check my emails to arrange an interview date. Booked in for this week….I’d be fibbing if I said the nerves weren’t kicking in already …

What were your official starting time and finish time back then? or at least the hours you were contracted to be paid? 4.30-12.30?
If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next
