It's very difficult to directly attribute suicide to any single issue,Suicide notes are generally short and tend to concentrate on saying goodbye rather than describing what led to the decision.
Since we can't really ask the dead after the fact speculating one way or the other is pointless but what we do know for sure is that bullying and harassment often results in or exacerbates depression and many suicide victims have a proven medical history of depression so it's not a leap of faith to imagine that there would be some correlation between the two.
There may or may not be some correlation between the two, depression in itself is probably the primary cause and may have innumerable sub factors of which either bullying or harassment may be present in some cases but there are far more suicides of which neither bullying nor harassment play any part whatsoever.
Marriage failure, debt, close relative dying, the possible causes go on ad infinitum.

There is a young guy in our office. He's quite new to the job. A nice guy. But I think he is being bullied. This guy is what I think you call a PHG? He is talking down to the new guy, really nagging him over the smallest thing. To the point that its hard to watch. The new guy came up to me today and said he thinks this PHG guy has it in for him. And I agreed. It's really starting to bother him.

Is this bullying? I feel like I should say something.

We all talk about B&H because we all know how endemic it is within the organisation and have either been the subject of or witnessed to this type of behaviour. n the past managers of all levels have clubbed together to protect each other and one of the main failings of the investigation procedure is that this is allowed to happen (as with the grievance procedure). Offices and Mail Centres have been allowed to investigate their own cases and this was never ever going to work. A fundamental change is needed which ensures that cases are investigated by independent, skilled individuals who do not know the people involved, have no vested interests and are not going to be intimidated by rank.

Yes it's bullying.
Yes you should say something.
If you don't feel comfortable approaching this "PHG" then speak to your rep and get the rep to speak to him but make it clear to all parties that if it continues you will take it through formal channels.
We all have a responsibility to challenge bullying wherever and whenever we see it.

Be prepared to become a target too....As 'some' Managers will turn their abuse on you for being a decent, caring human being, who has the courage to defend a colleague...'they' don't like it when you explain their behaviour goes against 'Their Business Code of Standards' because it reminds them that 'they' Don't have ANY....Period!

Bullying by managers is a big thing ,on the HAVE YOUR SAY there is a question ARE YOU BEING BULLIED and it gives a list who by. One of SAFEGUARDS is if there is a high percentage of people in office saying they are being bullied then the PO have to act . They send in an investigating officer (ours was a manager )they ask everybody whats been happening they take the information back AND ARE SUPPOSED TO COME BACK WITH FINDINGS !!!!! .In our office the investigating officer never returned ,but was seen a YEAR later and was asked why they didn't return with the findings THE MANAGER SAID NOTHING AND WALKED AWAY says it all .

But, had the perpetrator been a postie, they would have been for it.

Exactly ,not only do the management get away with b/h ,they have double standards .Take for instance WILFULL DELAY OF MAIL - posties being sacked for this then the day after a strike Management tell you not to claim overtime and to WIFULLY DELAY MAIL WHEN IT SUITS :arrrghhh

Stand up as an office, in my office if someone is being bullied we ALL are, we will not stand for it hence i work in an office with alomost no B&H, stand up to these fools and they become weak, infanct harmless, we control our office through knowledge and unity, cover managers fear coming to our office as they know they are in for a hard time, the power is with you people if you are willing to stand together rather than look after number one, a lesson to all:)

This happened to me I cut off Monday, The person who done the cut offs could not find the addresses and bought it back.
They sneaked it into the work on wednesday

" to WIFULLY DELAY MAIL WHEN IT SUITS"
No way would my office stick togther over B/H , as this happened a few weks back and everyone just turned a blind eye except a few of us who said something to management who then just let it carry on

Was told yesterday by our DOM (a lady bless her) we weren`t allowed to take our delivery pouches home, if you don`t need to come the office you need to make arrangements for them to be collected, the reason? because they are royal mail property, I pointed out so was the uniform we were wearing. do they want us to strip down to our pants and socks before going home.
Just how trivial can you get?

I recently stood up for a member against a manager who was talking to him like s**t on the floor, I let rip then the guy also piped up back.

Brilliant. :Very Happy

Lino snook back in his office and said little since.

I won't let a manager belittle someone :cuppa
